Matua began as a small family-run winery in West Auckland, New Zealand in 1973. The name Matua, in New Zealand's native language, means "head of the family," an appropriate title given this winery's instrumental role in developing Sauvignon Blanc into what is now New Zealand's most acknowledged wine varietal.
