Matua began as a small family-run winery in West Auckland, New Zealand in 1973. The name Matua, in New Zealand's native Maori language, means "head of the family," an appropriate title given this winery's instrumental role in developing Sauvignon Blanc into what is now New Zealand's most acknowledged wine varietal. Growing up in a winemaking family, Matua founders Ross and Bill Spence developed a vision to revolutionize the New Zealand wine industry by making the best wines from the best vineyards. This philosophy still stands today and has earned Matua international recognition for their pioneering work.
