A little background

Breckenridge PX Cask Finished Whiskey starts with their normal high-rye bourbon whiskey that’s aged a minimum of three years. It’s then finished for an undisclosed amount of time in used Pedro Ximenez (PX) sherry casks from the Andalusia province in Spain.  Once finished the whiskey proofed down 90 proof and sold for the retail price of $75. For this review, we we sampled from Batch No. 2.

(Tasted neat from a Glencairn.)

Color

Medium Gold

Nose

Toffee, golden raisins, plums, and quite a bit astringent.

Palate

Thin with dark fruit, nutmeg, and a slight hint of allspice.

Finish

Short and tannic with a cinnamon swell.

In closing

I know that sourcing PX barrels cannot be cheap, but at the end of the day the quality of the whiskey needs to justify the associated cost of the barrel finishing. Unfortunately, this is an example of a whiskey that I find hard to recommend for the price, but if you are a sherry fan this might be right up your alley.
